Why People Get Scammed

Every one in ten Nigerian have been scammed!  That's quite interesting if you ask me considering the fact that we claim to be a very smart bunch. But why do people really get scammed? I believe there are two reasons why people get scammed and I'm going to be sharing them with you in this short article.

1. Greed

The number one reason why people get scammed is because of greed. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines greed as “a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed". When a man or woman is tricked by an anonymous call or text message with the promise of making ten million naira with just ten thousand naira — that person is greedy!

2. The Wrong Mindset

The second major reason why most people get scammed is due to the 'one-day-I-go-blow' mindset. We seem to have this illusion that one day God will pick up our calls, we would hit millions and all our financial problems will be solved. The main culprits of this false mindset are church-goers, but that's another topic for another day.

So, as a result of this mindset, when we receive a call or text with the possibility of earning millions, we think within ourselves: "perhaps the time I've been waiting for is finally here". Just last week, a neighbour of mine was almost the victim of a scam. He received a call by someone he thought he knew with a business offer of making 85 million naira within a month! He only barely escaped because he was very broke at the time and couldn't afford to meet the demands of the 419 guys. Just like most people, this neighbour of mine is also trying to blow!

I conclude with this — whenever someone calls you or text you with a business offer that seems too good to be true, ask yourself the following questions: what have I done for him that will make him bring this opportunity to me and not someone else? Doesn't he have brothers, sisters or a girlfriend that he loves more than me? In my experience, when a deal seems too good to be true, it's usually not true.
