SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO

A worrying trend in the Bayelsa State Public Service is that as soon as a person retires from the Service, they start having all sorts of health problems. Sometimes, it is so severe that it brings about their untimely death!

A former driver in my Ministry was paralyzed with a stroke just months after retiring. Another man, from a different Ministry, recently slumped and died while trying to lift a keg of water. The reason was said to be high blood pressure. And there are other cases I can't talk about here.

So, what could be the reason for this? Here is my personal opinion: the realization that they no longer have something to look forward to, like the demands of an 8-4 job, fills them with great anxiety and dread that eventually wreaks havoc on their health. I know that's a bold assertion, but I have proof to back up my claim.

Not having something to look forward to can indeed have a negative impact on one's health. The anticipation of a future event or goal can provide a sense of motivation and purpose, leading to improved physical and mental well-being. Research has shown that the mere act of looking forward to something releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. Dopamine triggers feelings of excitement, anticipation, and happiness, which can significantly improve our overall emotional and physical well-being. Take that away from an individual's life, and watch them deteriorate fast in soul and body.

In conclusion, having something to look forward to can have a profound impact on health. It promotes mental and emotional well-being, increases motivation, reduces stress, enhances social connections, and boosts resilience. So, always have plans and goals for tomorrow because that's the secret to a happy, healthy, vibrant life.
